In order to lower the frequency of robbery assaults on the
vans during Cash-in-Transit (CIT), the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and
the Bank of Ghana (BoG) have been tasked with making sure that banks operate
with armored bullion vans.
George Ayisi, a government spokesman, said he has complete
faith and confidence in the current IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to apprehend
the robbers who attacked a bullion van at Ablekuma in Accra on Thursday, June
22, killing a police officer in the process. He made the statement while
discussing the Big Issue on TV3 on Friday, June 23.
After calling the BoG and the IGP to strive to lessen the
assaults, he declared, "I have absolute trust and confidence in the
current IGP to apprehend the perpetrators."
The Bank of Ghana stated that it will not permit any
inferior or soft-skinned Cash in Transit (CIT) vehicles into any of its
locations nationally if the central bank's requirement for all financial institutions
to purchase protected sophisticated vans was not followed in 2021.
However, shortly after the James Town robbery attempt on a
currency van, which resulted in the death of a police officer and the shooting
of another bystander, this deadline was extended to July 1, 2023.
The Inspector General of Police issued warnings not to
escort any cars without the required security for police personnel after a
string of robberies targeted cops escorting subpar automobiles for cash
transfers.
The police issued a severe warning to the criminals
responsible for the officer's slaying in relation to the attacks at Ablekuma.
The security guard was shot many times at close range while
guarding a bullion wagon.
The tragic tragedy happened after an attempted robbery at
the Star Oil Filling Station in the Accra neighborhood of Ablekuma Fan Milk.
The bullion van reportedly followed the four criminals as
they proceeded to refuel at the gas station, which is where the gunfight took
place.
According to a police statement, "the police are on a
manhunt to arrest a gang of four robbers who attacked a bullion van at Ablekuma
Fanmilk, a suburb of Accra, and shot the police escort who sadly passed
away."
"Our hearts go out to the family of our departed
coworker in particular and to the whole Police Service staff in general.
We want to reassure the public that the robbers will be
apprehended and brought to justice.
